Visiting Oslo when at the RECE-conference in 2004

At the conference your role is of course among others "a researcher at a conference", with all the conflicts, problems or "eureka-moments" related to that. But getting around in Oslo... woops... suddenly you're tourist. Here are some useful links to support your role as a tourist in Oslo.

TIPS ON BEING A TOURIST IN OSLO FROM JEANETTE IN THE HOST COMMITTEE

For those of you coming from the  airport (Gardemoen) there is an easy to find and use fast train into the centre of the city (about 25 minutes). Or get the bus, which is much cheaper but takes double the time and ends up at the Radison Hotel just near Oslo University College (and the palace). Go to the automatic banking machines dispensing Norwegian kroner at the airport before you need to buy your train or bus ticket. All credit cards work, just press the buttons for the machines to write English. Taxis (not cheap) when you off the fast train at Central Station (Oslo S) or at National Theatre Station (nearest to Oslo University College). Taxis also (usually) at the bus stop at the Radison Hotel.

If you need information ask anyone around you. Just about everyone can speak English and will be pleased to tell you where to get off the train etc. For getting around Oslo feet work  well. Or use the trams (trikk), buses and underground trains (T-bane, pronounced ‘tay-banei’, look for the big T sign). A flexi-card with 8 trips on it can be used on any of these. Buy it from the machines at the T-barn stations or from the drivers when you get on the bus or tram. Or you can just buy single tickets each time you go anywhere. A single ticket or one trip with a flexicard lasts an hour, so you can get on and off buses and trams and trains as often as you like for an hour and it counts as one trip. Ferry trips on the fjord are a good idea if you’re in tourist mode. There are cheap ferries (20 kroner) to small islands without cars and bridges. You get these ferries from Vippetangen, just keep walking beside the fjord away from the fortress and past all the boats and the fish factory and queue up with the locals. Last ferry back is about 11pm.
