Introduction

This sequence demonstrates using classroom language for simple, everyday  classroom management purposes.

Previewing tasks

1. How can you justify having a language activity where you tell the pupils NOT to speak?

2. Can you think of any non-language activity you might use in one of your classes?

Viewing tasks

1. Do you think there is any language activity at all going on during the silent period of this sequence? If so, what is it?

2. When the speaking part starts, what sort language is being practised here?

3. To what extent can a silent period as it is used here create in the learner a strong desire to talk when they are allowed to do so?

Questions for discussion

Think again about the second question in the pre-viewing tasks and think about how you might follow up such a silent activity. Try it out in a class and see how the pupils react. Ask them what they thought about it.
