ENGLISH IN ACTION

INTRODUCTION

English in Action offers teachers of English a selection of short videos of classroom activities which focus on English as 'et opplevelsesfag'.

Engelsk er ... et opplevelsesfag. Det skal legges vekt på skapende virksomhet der blant annet drama og musikk får en naturlig plass. Elevene skal bruke språket til å produsere egne muntlige og skriftlige tekster som kan vises fram for andre. (L97, s.224)

English in Action has three main parts: Video sequences, questions for these, and a list of references and resources. In the key questions some theoretical support for English as 'et opplevelsesfag' is outlined in the answers.

As with every text, you will experience these short videos of classroom activities through the filter of

  • your background
  • your interests
  • your preferences
  • your aims

They can, therefore, provide a useful starting point for discussion with other English teachers and may encourage you to reflect on your own classroom practices. Perhaps you will be able to see ways of adapting activities and methods to suit your classroom.

The videos may be used for many different observation purposes. For example, they may be used for observing

  • teaching techniques
  • the use of English as classroom language
  • classroom interaction
  • classroom management
