Teaching English in China?

The Department of English at Oslo University College is taking part in a project with the educational authorities in the Putuo District in Zhejiang Province in China. You can read about the whole project here: The OUC-Putuo Oral English Project . So far, six teachers have spent from three months to two whole years of teaching oral English at various schools in the city of Shenjiamen in the Putuo District. They have worked as volunteer teachers devoting themselves entirely to teaching speaking skills.

Alongside the volunteer teacher part of the project, the English teachers themselves at all the local junior middle schools and primary schools have taken part in oral English workshops taught by staff from the Department of English at Oslo University College.

Since 2006, Norwegian students of English are more than welcome to do part of their obligatory teaching practice (internship) in Putuo schools. In January 2006 six students took this opportunity and taught English in three different junior middle schools (lower secondary level). You can read about their experience here. In January/February 2007 4 students from HiO taught in 4 different schools for two weeks and took part in the oral English workshop for primary school teachers run by Mona E. Flognfeldt, and in 2008, as many as seven students of English had a go.

If you are interested in becoming a voluntary teacher or would like to do your 4-week teaching practice in Putuo schools, please contact Mona Evelyn Flognfeldt.
